Matai swirling grain coffee table
Handcrafted from an 800-1000year old stunning Matai slab cut from a salvaged log from the Pureora forest. A Matai of this age would of reached heights of 30m tall and 1.2m in diameter, The tree/log was left behind by Native timber loggers around the 1950s and lay on the forest floor for roughly 70 years until we found and recovered it under MPI Approval. A Matai slab of this age and size is extremely rare and the timber contains a lot of stunning swirling grain which is very uncommon for Matai making it even more unique.
The slabs natural voids have been filled with slightly transparent black epoxy resin to preserve and highlight such a special piece of timber in its natural form. The table top has been coated in a liquid glass resin for exceptional protection and has a further top coat of Top quality satin polyurethane to give a silky feel and look to the table surface.
The Table base has been made using a single slab of matai cut from the same log as the table top which has been carefully cut and joined in a way to give a continuous wood grain pattern right around.
